Spring is rounding the corner to summer.  Each year at this time I plant my culinary herb garden.  Fricassee Sassafras loves the lemon grass!  Do you have favorite herbs that you enjoy cooking with?

If so, you should try your hand at growing them this spring.  It is so enjoyable to walk outside the back door and cut or pinch fresh herbs for my culinary creations.  Click the link below to watch my short (1 minute 51 seconds) tutorial.

Click here to watch PLANTING YOUR CONTAINER HERB GARDEN video.

Get one pot for each herb you intend to grow.  I recommend using feet to elevate each pot rather than using the clay saucers for drainage, so that water doesn’t pool and flood herbs or act as a mosquito magnet.

I have used the Miracle Grow Soil for vegetables/flowers mixed with top soil for many years.  There is also a Miracle Grow soil now with moisture control if you think you may under or over water your herbs.

Purchasing starter herbs for the pots is easy to do.  If you want to plant 2 (of the same herb) because you intend on using that particular herb often, I recommend a larger pot (10 “+).   If planting one starter herb you can use a smaller pot (6ish”).

Make sure to check with a local greenhouse or google to determine what zone is best for your area of the world as it does vary!

Water your herbs in the early morning and again in the early evening.

Below is a list of what I am planting:

3 varieties of mint (peppermint, spearmint, chocolate mint)
3 varieties of basil (sweet, opal, african blue)
2 varieties of thyme (french, lemon)
2 varieties of parsley (flat leaf, curly)
2 varieties of chives (regular, garlic)
Sage
Cilantro
Lemon balm
Lemon grass
Rosemary
Bay leaf tree
Dill
Cutting celery
Savory
Lavender
Oregano
Curry
Stevia

Would love to hear what your favorite herbs are!  Please share with us in the comments section below.

Love this Sandra, thanks for sharing. I especially appreciated the suggestion of feet under the posts to elevate the roots for circulation of air and avoid flooding. Your photos are very nice too. thank you.

Thanks for this timely article. I usually plant Basil, Sage and Chives, but looking over your herb garden, I’m inspired to try more.
Thanks for the watering tips and putting the pots on feet as opposed to in a dish. Great advice. Thanks !!
